Artist statement
- Jackson Falls – This image was several years in the making. Jackson Falls, found on the Natchez Trace Parkway, normally has only a trickle of water, particularly in the summer. After many visits the light, mist and abundant water flow, courtesy of hurricane Katrina, provided me with this lovely image. The log in the foreground serves to pull you into the composition and the mist and a long exposure softens the image into a watercolor like quality, which I love.
- Meadow Stream – I visit this location every time I am in Oregon visiting family. In this instance, the setting sun highlights the distant meadows in the background, as the “S” curves of the stream in the shade reflect the beautiful blue sky. The clouds in the background further reinforce the curve of the stream, to create and entrance into the composition. I worked fast as the light and image was gone in minutes.
- Smokies Reflections – Most of my time in photography is spent looking and waiting. While fall colors abounded in the Smokies, I was looking for something a little different. This one was found in a picnic area, of all places. A small side stream of the Little River created a quiet pool, with beautiful reflections, but seemed a little too static. I tossed small pebbles in the pool and varied exposure to create the image I envisioned.
Resume / bio
Mike Serkownek – Trace of Light
Mike Serkownek is a nature and landscape fine art photographer. His subjects come primarily from Oregon and Tennessee, as well as other areas of the United States.
His photography captures the lavish landscapes and glorious nature of Oregon and Tennessee through simple and unique compositions. His prints often have the appearance of a fine watercolor painting rather than a photograph. Some images require return visits, over years, for all the conditions of light, color and subject to come together to produce the print Mike envisions.
Mike's primary focus is fine art prints. The technological advances in color photography technology have allowed him to do the image capture, scanning and printing in house. He uses 35mm film, high-resolution digital, as well as a medium format film for his photography. Professional giclee' printers are used to produce the prints allowing for the use of many different papers such as cotton rag fine art paper and canvas. All art paper prints are archival and will far outlast traditional photographs. No digital composites are made except to increase dynamic range or create panoramas. Digital work is similar to traditional darkroom techniques of dodging, burning, contrast adjustment and color correction.
Mike has had photographs published in Classic Toy Trains, Nature Photographer, the NANPA Showcase, and has been featured on the cover of The Tennessee Conservationist several times. His shows have included the Pryor Art Gallery at Columbia State Community College, the Maury County Arts Guild and the Metro Nashville Arts Commission. He is member of North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA), Maury County Arts Guild and on the Metropolitan Nashville Art Commissions register of artists.
Mike lives in Middle Tennessee with Sandra, his wife, and his two daughters, Rachel & Sara. They own a small hobby farm near Mt. Pleasant and share it with their pampered horses, dogs, and cat. They strive to keep a portion of the farm wildlife friendly. Mike's sister, brother and father live in the Bend, Oregon, area.
