Artist statement

“My goal in a painting, whether working outdoors or in the studio, is to give you a spontaneous impression of the extraordinary beauty that I have found in ordinary places near and far. For me each painting is a personal journey, but one that is easily shared with others.”

Sherrie R. Levine

Resume / bio

Sherrie Russ Levine, born in Georgetown, South Carolina, received her degree from Ringling School of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida in 1981. She worked as an art director in Atlanta, Georgia 10 years before making Nashville, Tennessee her home. Since 1995 she has focused her energy on paintings in oil and actively participates in art exhibits and events for Tennessee Land Conservation.

Levine is an artist noted for her loose impressionist paintings that are vibrant with light and color. Her works capture the emotional impact of a scene with expressive brushwork or palette knife, a clear and direct statement, and the strongest color effect possible -- the varied subject matter is secondary. She often travels to find new inspiration and loves to paint en plein air, which translates to “in the open air” in French. Levine’s paintings are gaining national recognition in private collections and have become a part of the Tennessee State Museum’s Permanent Collection. She has continued her study of painting in workshops with nationally known artists Dee Beard Dean, Kim English, Barbara Flowers, Camille Przewodek and Leslie Rich.
