Artist statement

Somebody embroidered the doily.
Somebody waters the plant,
or oils it, maybe. Somebody
arranges the rows of cans
so that they softly say:
ESSO-so-so-so
to high-strung automobiles.
Somebody loves us all.
—excerpt from “The Filling Station”, by Elizabeth Bishop

These paintings underscore aspects of daily life that we might overlook in our domestic environments. The paintings are made in a spare room at home, depict or re-work images that enter the home, and are often absorbed right back into the home upon completion. This cyclical process of making, for me, resonates in the same way that daily chores or routines do. I employ the languages of representation and abstraction in my work because the slippage of those two languages comes closest to articulating my own experience of encountering images. There is a bias for pattern and decoration in the work, as textiles abound in my own home. I believe that their inherent pop culture narratives also allow my paintings to comfortably reside in many contexts outside of the home.
