Sculptor Mel Chin To Give Public Art Forum Talk
Noted artist and Peabody College alumnus Mel Chin will be guest speaker on the Public Art Forum series Thursday, February 22, at 7 p.m. Chin's video and slide lecture will be in room 126 of David K. Wilson Hall on the Vanderbilt University campus, 111 21st Avenue South, Nashville. The event is free and open to the public.
Series sponsors are the Metro Nashville Arts Commission, the Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery, the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Office of Cultural Enrichment, the Visual Arts Alliance of Nashville (VAAN), and the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.
Chin has expanded the definition of public art through the distinctive installations he has created over the past twenty-five years. The artist is known for the broad range of approaches in his art, including works that require multi-disciplinary, collaborative teamwork and works that join together cross-cultural aesthetics with complex ideas.
Since the 1970s Chin has produced sculptures that combine art, science, and imagination, such as his Revival Field ecological projects. One of his current projects is the Nashville Cultural Arts Project (NCAP) at the former Neuhoff Packing Plant between First Avenue North and the Cumberland River. The NCAP is helping to sponsor Chin's Public Art Forum appearance.
Chin is one of sixteen artists who will be featured on the Public Broadcasting Service series Art of the 21st Century to be broadcast later this year. One of his small sculptures is on the Carell Woodland Sculpture Trail at Cheekwood.
